The RESET 2026 Record
Seven sessions, in
their own words
Every speaker at RESET 2026 was asked to make marketers think differently about the year ahead.
Here are the ideas worth keeping.
Highlights · RESET 2026
Josh Faulks
Growing Through Constant Change
“It feels like we’re flying the plane while we’re building it. We’re still serving customers, we’re still leading teams, and we’re still searching for growth.”
Opening Remarks
Chief Executive Officer, Marketing Association of Australia
The key takeout
Adaptability, not resilience, is the operating requirement for marketers now.
- 01
Adaptability beats resilience. The challenge is no longer simply absorbing disruption, it is being able to move, adjust and keep making decisions while conditions change.
- 02
Growth still has to happen amid uncertainty. Technology, regulation, consumer behaviour and economic pressure are not temporary interruptions. They are the operating environment.
- 03
Leaders cannot run permanently hot. Confidence without certainty is necessary, but so is knowing what to stop, what to say no to and where to conserve energy.
Nick Bryant
Trust Is the Competitive Advantage
“Trust is not simply a journalistic virtue. It has become a strategic asset for businesses and brands.”
Speaker 01
Award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster
The key takeout
Trust has moved from journalistic virtue to commercial asset, and Australia is well placed to lead on it.
- 01
AI may increase the value of trusted information. As synthetic content and hallucinations multiply, accuracy, context and first-hand reporting become more differentiated.
- 02
Journalism and marketing are both in the trust business. Brand credibility increasingly depends on what people believe, not simply what they are exposed to.
- 03
Australia has an opportunity to lead. Bryant argued Australia can become a global exemplar for trusted information, journalism and thoughtful regulation rather than simply following what happens elsewhere.

Dr Catherine Ball
From AI Hype to How
“AI is not the enemy. It’s mathematics.”
Speaker 02
Futurist and social architect.
The key takeout
AI matters where it converges with other technologies, and where it makes good people better rather than replacing them.
- 01
Stop treating AI as a standalone technology. The real transformation comes from its convergence with robotics, medicine, spatial computing, wearables and other emerging technologies.
- 02
Move from attention to anticipation. The next phase of customer experience is not just responding faster, but using technology to understand what someone may need before they ask.
- 03
Don’t automate great humans out of the experience. Her David Jones example was perfect: the exceptional salesperson should not be replaced by AI. Give her better information and make her even better at what humans uniquely do.

Why Different Beats Better
“Logic isn’t there to tell you how to think from the beginning. It’s there to sense-check your dreams. Dream first.”
Speaker 03
Alchemist, behavioural science impresario and accidental TikTok star
The key takeout
Imagination comes first and logic second, and advantage sits in the variable competitors are ignoring.
- 01
Business has the order backwards. We increasingly demand financial and logical justification before an idea is allowed to exist, which eliminates imagination before it has a chance.
- 02
Look for what competitors are ignoring. When everyone benchmarks the same things, everyone becomes the same. Competitive advantage often sits in an overlooked variable.
- 03
Different can be more valuable than better. Rather than incrementally improving what everybody already competes on, find something nobody else considers important and disproportionately invest in it.

Marketing in a Sea of Sameness
“When the world becomes a sea of sameness, the function which is going to distinguish and differentiate a company is its marketing.”
Speaker 04
Legendary marketing disrupter
The key takeout
Marketing has to prove its commercial contribution, and market itself while it does.
- 01
Marketing has to prove its contribution to the business. Brand affinity, funnels and marketing jargon mean little to a CFO if marketers cannot demonstrate what changed commercially.
- 02
Marketing needs to market marketing. Define why the function exists, position it internally and make its value understood before someone else defines it for you.
- 03
AI could make marketing more important, not less. If AI pushes businesses toward a “sea of sameness”, psychology, emotion, culture, creativity and distinctive brand building become sources of competitive advantage.

Solve a Problem Worth Solving
“If there’s not a customer problem that you’re trying to solve, then what’s the point?”
Speaker 05
EGM Brand & Customer Experience, Suncorp Group, and Chief Creative Officer, Leo
The key takeout
Purpose works when it changes the business, not just the advertising. That is why Haven worked.
- 01
Start with a problem worth solving. Suncorp moved from communicating recovery after disasters to helping Australians prevent and mitigate damage before it happened.
- 02
Long-term platforms beat disconnected campaigns. Haven grew from years of work around resilience, not a single brief or awards-season idea.
- 03
Purpose works when it changes the business. Resilience influenced customer experience, products, government advocacy, data strategy and commercial performance, rather than sitting in advertising alone.

Andre Agassi
Control the Controllable
“I never said I had to be 100%, but I never accepted myself being less than 100% of what I could be.”
Speaker 06
Sporting legend. Champion of mental resilience.
The key takeout
Excellence is accumulated out of controllables, and purpose is what makes it last.
- 01
The one-percenters are accumulated, not discovered. Preparation, recovery, observation and thousands of tiny decisions made away from the spotlight ultimately create the advantage.
- 02
Control the controllable. Agassi stopped obsessing over ranking and outcomes and concentrated on the point he was playing, the decisions he could make and the people he chose around him.
- 03
Purpose changed his relationship with success. Winning initially defined his identity. Later, success became about service, particularly creating educational opportunity for children who had fewer choices than he did.
